Read on to discover some of my top picks for a unique honeymoon destination. Then, send me a message to plan your perfect romantic retreat.

1. Indonesia

It’s no secret that Bali is an incredible destination for all types of travelers. For honeymooners, this small island boasts some pretty amazing beach resorts and spas, jungle retreats, and unique cultural experiences. For those looking to get further off the beaten path, consider an escape to Nihi Sumba, a small, exclusive island hideaway with luxury thatched-roof bungalows and villas situated on the beach. Couples can enjoy fishing and diving, yoga classes, or a whole lot of nothing.

2. Iceland

For those honeymooners who aren’t so interested in the typical beach trip, consider a romantic retreat to Iceland. The country is best for active couples and boasts some of the most incredibly unique nature that you’ll find anywhere in the world, including geysers and geothermal activity, active volcanoes, waterfalls, black sand beaches, and glacier-cut fjords. After a day’s hike, you can unwind in nature baths or a cozy cabin retreat with views of the Northern Lights. Best of all, this country is a wonderfully easy and short flight from the US, making it a very accessible destination.

3. Argentina

Argentina is a country of romance. From seductive tango to sipping fine wine to picturesque landscapes, it’s the perfect destination for honeymooners. The country’s capital of Buenos Aires is often fondly referred to as the Paris of South America. Once you’ve had your city fix, you’ll want to head out to Mendoza, Argentina’s wine producing region, where you can explore wineries set against the backdrop of the Andes Mountains. Adventurous couples might also enjoy pristine hiking through Patagonia or a moonlight walk of Iguazu Falls, one of the world’s most incredible waterfalls.

4. Vietnam

Looking for a little bit of adventure mixed with beaches and relaxation? Then head to Vietnam. Honeymooners should start with a scenic cruise around Halong Bay, a turquoise grotto dotted with 1600 islands and islets. Then, explore quaint, slow paced towns like Hoi An, and unwind on the beautiful beaches of Nha Trang. For adventure seekers, I recommend further exploring Northern Vietnam, which boasts some fantastic hiking and cycling opportunities, as well as cave trekking and underground rivers. On top of all of that, Vietnam has some pretty amazing cuisine, and most North American visitors will find this to be a pleasantly affordable destination.

5. Montenegro

Croatia has recently become a wildly popular European destination, and for good reason! The Adriatic Coast is dotted with gorgeous beaches, charming medieval towns, and a great food and wine scene. But don’t forget about Croatia’s tiny neighbor to the south, Montenegro. You’ll get a similar vibe here without the crowds or the price tag, perfect for your romantic escape. The fortified coastal town of Kotor is just the spot for you to relax with your new spouse and enjoy the scenic views. For the ultimate retreat, stay at Aman Sveti Stefan, a luxurious hidden resort with gorgeous villas that overlook the Bay of Kotor. Explore Montenegro on its own, or easily combine it with a visit to Italy or Croatia. Either way, get here before everyone realizes just how great this country is.

6. Kenya & Tanzania

A safari sits at the top of many bucket lists. Although you might not think of this as a romantic trip, there are so many unique experiences to be shared here for newlyweds. Imagine waking up at Giraffe Manor in Kenya and sharing breakfast with giraffes poking their heads inside your window. Or, enjoy vast views of the Serengeti from your private infinity pool and villa at Sasakwa Lodge. Did you know that Africa has some of the most picturesque beaches in the world? End your trip with a visit to Zanzibar, a stunning tropical island just off the Tanzanian coast.

7. Moorea, French Polynesia

Names like Bora Bora and Tahiti might conjure up images of paradise in your mind, but neighboring Moorea is equally stunning. Couples can enjoy those incredible overwater bungalows that French Polynesia is famous for, while also having opportunities for local experiences, hiking, ATV tours, and boat trips. Moorea is easy to get to by ferry or plane once you reach the country, and direct flights from California are making French Polynesia more attainable than ever.

8. Savannah, Georgia

Are you looking for a quaint escape closer to home? Savannah is one of the best honeymoons that you can have right in the United States. With its unique blend of history and Southern charm, Savannah has enchanted visitors for centuries. There are tons of charming bed and breakfasts right in the city offering honeymoon packages with perks like spa treatments, Southern style breakfast in bed, and daily wine hour. Take a carriage ride through Savannah’s cobblestone streets and pass antebellum mansions, moss-draped trees, and historic landmarks. Relax on the pristine white-sand beaches of nearby Tybee Island, and end your day with a romantic riverside dinner.

9. Dubai

Dubai is a city that exudes luxury and romance in every way. Imagine alluring Arabian architecture, amazing shopping and dining, and an array of incredibly luxurious world class resorts. Dubai is even home to the world’s only 7 star hotel, the Burj Al Arab Jumeirah, which is practically dripping in diamonds and marble. During your stay, you can take a private sunset yacht cruise down Dhow Creek and explore the city’s charming souks (markets). However, a must do is a desert safari. You’ll be transferred by 4x4 SUV into the desert to enjoy camel rides, a sumptuous Middle Eastern dinner, belly dancing, henna painting, Arabian coffee, and more.

10. Portugal

Only a 6 hour flight from the US, Portugal is the perfect romantic retreat for your honeymoon. Begin your stay in the charming, colorful capital of Lisbon before exploring castles and palaces in the stunning UNESCO city of Sintra. Or, head to the coastal region of Algarve for soaring cliffs and sea caves, glorious beaches, and world class dining and resort living. No trip to Portugal would be complete without some time in wine country. Consider a stay at the Six Senses Hotel in Douro Valley, a dreamy manor house set on a hill overlooking the vineyards and river below.
